The following are Readers Guide discussion questions for each of the books in the Janus Unfolding Trilogy.

  • Do you think the grandfather is right to be concerned about Jimmy’s future?  Why or why not?
  • Was it helpful or distracting to work through two different timelines in the first part of the book? Why or why not?
  • What did you like about the way Martha introduced herself?
  • Do you think it more likely that Artificial Intelligence will “emerge” from complex system as Martha did or will be constructed directly, on purpose?
  • What was your reaction when Milly Li changed roles?
  • Why do you think the author chose not to develop a relationship between Anne Davies and Jeff Pierce?
  • What did you think when the man with a bandage surrounding his head appeared?
  • Are there characters that you would have liked to seen more of or less of? Why?
  • Do you think the conversion of Sheldon McCray was adequately covered?
  • This book and series touch on the subject of evolution.

  • What themes are introduced in the first few chapters?
  • What was your reaction to Senator Anderson’s life changes?
  • This book brings up telepathy. Have you ever thought you were telepathic? How fast would thought travel? How far?
  • The H2s have an altruistic approach to life; act with caring and love. Do you think humans could evolve in that direction?
  • Fear plays such a major role in today’s world, yet the H2s don’t seem to be fearful, don’t act from fear. What are your thoughts about this possibility?
  • Pierre Tielhard De Chardin wrote about Noosphere as is mentioned in the book? In the story, the concept is stretched beyond what De Chardin had in mind. How realistic do you think the concept in the book is? Would such a development be positive? Why or why not?
  • This story suggests that it is possible to end war and armed aggression. What are the causes of war? Can we stop having wars? How or why not?
  • What purposes did a relationship between Anne and Jeff serve in this book?
  • What were the benefits of using Hagar, a thirteen year-old boy, for such an important role?

  • What purpose did having the Gerard Joyce character serve?
  • When the change was made in Carmen, it was said that she already had the abilities she demonstrated after the alteration, that they were just blocked, and the barriers were removed. What are your thoughts about humans having untapped potential like those Carmen exhibited?
  • There is discussion in the book of dimensions beyond our four usual ones (x, y, z, and time). What do you imagine the nature of those dimensions would be? Think in terms of the beings in the book Flatland where everything is in two dimensions and of those beings trying to imagine “height” or “thickness”?
  • Space-faring races are brought up in the book. There was evidence of earlier races but none that were active in this part of the galaxy. When human teams went out, they found the same thing. What do you think of the situation where humans are the “advanced” beings doing the visiting instead Earth being visited by advanced beings?
  • The Janus Unfolding Series introduces a variety of intelligent, conscious, self-aware beings, with several new ones added in this book. What are your thoughts about each of them: their nature, how they came into being, the likelihood, desirability, etc.?
  • Do you think the change to human DNA described in the book, which resulted in H2s being created, was a natural phenomenon or was it introduced by an external entity? If natural, why do you think so?   If by an external entity, who and why was it done?
